The Popes' Palace
The Palais des Papes is one of the most impressive historical monuments in Europe. Located in the city of Avignon, it was built in the 14th century when the popes moved their residence from Rome to Avignon. This massive Gothic palace served as the center of the Catholic Church for nearly seventy years. Its thick walls, high towers, and grand halls show both religious power and medieval architecture. Visit Avignon : The Bridge
The Pont Saint-Bénézet, also known as the Pont d’Avignon, is one of the most famous landmarks in Avignon. It was built in the 12th century to cross the Rhône River. According to legend, a young shepherd named Bénézet was inspired by God to build the bridge. Originally, the bridge had twenty-two arches and connected Avignon to the opposite bank. Over time, floods from the Rhône destroyed many parts of the structure. Today, only four arches remain, making it a historic and symbolic monument. The bridge is also famous for the traditional French song “Sur le pont d’Avignon.” Visitors come from all over the world to see it and learn about its history. It is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in the city.
